Mission Statement
The aim of the IMS Study Group “Tablature in Western Music” is to promote, research, and exchange ideas and materials pertaining to all aspects of Western music transmitted in tablature for all instruments. The principal areas of research and activity concern tablature sources, problems of editing and editorial techniques, cataloguing, performance practice, intabulated music and the musical mainstream, and the role of tablature music in the the social history of music. The group is particularly committed to breaking down the barriers that have made it difficult for scholars with little knowledge of tablature notations to assimilate intabulated repertories into studies of history and style.
